A Fresh Start

The Cuoco family.New Perspective: An empty marshfront lot in a new neighborhood on the just-developed Captain’s Island gave the Cuoco family the perfect opportunity to start over, embrace their passions, and create a space for the next stage of their lives. The resulting home eschews the traditional architecture and lush green lawns of its nearby neighbors on Daniel Island. Its modular design is highlighted by a tower, floating staircase, and glass entryway nestled in a landscape of native grasses, shrubs, and trees. On A Limb: “From the start, my clear goal was to bring the outdoors in for an open-living, tree-house concept,” explains Melissa Lenox, who designed the interiors of the home. “All main living spaces and the master were intended to bring the unique and beautiful Lowcountry nature indoors.” She chose neutral colors for the furniture, such as the HomeNature sectional and Verellen dining chairs, and incorporated soft marsh hues in accent pieces like paintings, rugs, and pillows. The HomeNature sectional.Feature & Function: Designed to draw the eye to the landscape beyond its floor-to-ceiling windows, the entryway’s white oak flooring, cypress barn door, and wooden beam are accented by steel and glass, including an Urban Electric light fixture and custom door hardware.Center Stage: Four Palecek “Fritz Rope” stools provide front-row seating in the streamlined kitchen, where Frank can show off his cooking skills. The Silestone quartz-topped island incorporates a Rohl farmhouse sink and a Brizo faucet to match the pot filler above the Wolf range. The latter, set into a gorgeous Fireclay Tile backsplash, was a top priority for the home cook. “I just love my pot filler,” he says. “I use it all the time.”Ship to Shore: Modern, simplified shaker cabinets pair with shiplap on the island and walls to create a clean, simple look in the kitchen, pantry, and laundry room.“Shiplapping the whole house was in line with coastal living, but we removed all decorative trim elements to create a minimal, unfussy vibe,” says Lenox.Simply Luxe: The paired-down master suite feels glamorous yet comfortable. Tying into the black steel of the windows, the iron-framed “Marco Bed” by Oly Studio is softened by plush Peacock Alley bedding and a worn leather bench atop a vintage Oushak rug. A Restoration Hardware chandelier and Room & Board mirror complete the space.Distinctive Design’s custom cabinets and island in the large walk-in closet keep clutter at bay.In the adjoining bathroom, a large bubble chandelier from Pelle hangs above a Mirabelle freestanding tub.Cool Views: The outdoor living room and Gloster loungers offer prime seating next to the infinity pool installed by Aqua Blue Pools.A Fresh StartModern Mood: The Grid sectional and chairs from Gloster mix modern and organic, steel and teak, all accented by neutral greys and whites in the outdoor living room. “The back of the house is literally a nature wonderland,” says Lenox. “I felt the dichotomy of incorporating very modern furniture into such a natural landscape was interesting and unexpected.”Steeling Beauty: At the top of the home’s floating outdoor staircase, the custom steel and glass pivot door made by Arcadia Custom Building Materials provides entry to the glass breezeway, its industrial feel softened by a serene view of oak trees and marsh just beyond.
