In The Company Of Trees

This unlacquered brass wet bar, fabricated by Mount Pleasant metalworker Jon Mako, adds a warming graphic element to the dramatic kitchen.A grove of live oaks coupled with challenging property and marsh setback lines allowed this Shem Creek-adjacent home just a 30-foot-wide floor planOwners Alix and Mark Bragg pictured with their three pups, Kay, Peanut, and Junior) tackled this conundrum by taking a cue from the trees and building upward. The finished project marries a bold modern design with a soft Mediterranean warmth in a special Lowcountry setting.Alix describes the interiors as “classic modern, a mix of old and new.” In the main living area, against the sleek backdrop of white stucco walls and windows trimmed in Sherwin Williams’s “Rock Bottom,” an antique teak coffee table from Thailand, vintage Hermès tray, and comfy overstuffed white couch and leather chairs from Acquisitions Interiors are accented by bold, patterned pillows from GDC HomeLocal artist Jennifer Black’s marsh scene takes pride of place above the custom millwork mantel. Beneath, gas fireballs nestle in the soapstone surround to warm up the home on wintry days. The heart of the home is a stylized modern kitchen that dominates the main, multifunctional living space. A Michelangelo quartz-topped island is a haven of storage and boasts a brass fixture from Moluf’s and matte black Siematic drawers that secret away all the clutter. Kudu horn sconces from online retailer Dira and a vintage rug from 17 South provide warm, earthy tones that lead the eye to the stunning handcrafted French La Cornue range and the showstopping unlacquered brass wet bar.Unlacquered brass wet barHandcrafted French La Cornue rangeThe dining room completes the open plan living area, providing floor-to-ceiling views of the treetops from the antique reproduction table and antique chairs. The distressed wood sideboard from ESD anchors a calming ocean vista by Georgia artist Kathy Cousart. A tiered, brushed-brass chandelier from CB2 completes the look. The interior’s largely subdued palette gets flipped on its head in this sumptuous sitting room and office nook. A bold, banana leaf-themed wallpaper by Mokum complements the rich teal walls painted in Sherwin Williams’s “High Battery.” A velvet sofa from Acquisitions Interiors and a custom vintage Turkish oushak ottoman are plush accents. In The Company Of TreesIn The Company Of TreesAlix’s love of brass extends to the master bedroom where this vintage four-poster bed makes a big statement. Dramatic green velvet pillows stand out against the custom sueded headboard as well as Matouk bed linens from GDC Home—all capped off by a velvet footstool from Acquisitions Interiors.BATHING BEAUTY: It may look sleek and minimal, but this Laura Kirar freestanding bathtub from Kallista weighs more than 500 pounds. Installing it into Alix’s personal oasis “required a few good men,” she says. Brass fixtures from Moluf’s, a chair from Celadon Home, and a painting from Antiques of South Windermere pop in the all-white space. The white chair and ottoman from Acquisitions Interiors makes for a cozy reading nook in the bedroom.PASTEL PERFECT: The Braggs’s 15-year-old daughter, Ella, is “very opinionated” about her room, helping Alix design the space by combining the reproduction bamboo tester bed with the pillows in Schumacher’s Ananas print, both from Acquisitions Interiors, and her mom’s vintage side tables. The doors of the green-lacquered beauties fold down to provide the perfect spot for charging her phone and squirreling away clutter.A small desk from World Market is watched over by a darling Georgia Dearborn wildflower painting and green ceramic Foo dogs. The large, walk-in closet—complete with built-in drawers and a stacked washing machine and dryer—gives Ella plenty of storage space and helps her stay organized. A whimsical vintage toleware palm tree chandelier lends charm and character.Ella’s en-suite, a diminutive replica of her mom and dad’s grand bath, also boasts plenty of natural light. The freestanding tub with unlacquered brass fixtures, both from Moluf’s, continues the home’s brass theme, and a vintage Turkish rug over the white oak floor completes the relaxed yet elegant look.Grey wicker furniture from Celadon Home anchors the outdoor lounging space, with a pop of color provided by Serena and Lily pillows; the spectacular Artesia coffee table from GDC Home pays homage to its deep-rooted neighborsA winding deck leads down to a deep-water dock, where the family often retreats to explore the creek.Peanut enjoys the occasional dip, says Alix, but the Aquatica-installed saltwater pool with a shell-stone surround is generally the domain of her bevy of nieces and nephews.
