Beauty On The Bluff

Photos 23Issue September 2024
A modern farmhouse on a 12-acre parcel along Bohicket Creek meshes the Lowcountry’s past and present. With a coastal contemporary aesthetic, the home affords plenty of space for art and entertaining, while paying homage to the history of the grand oak-filled property. Zerkel commissioned artist Amy Dixon to paint the piece above the fireplace. Inspired by the property’s grove of oaks, it accentuates the room’s magnificent vaulted, oak-paneled ceiling.Floor-to-ceiling, folding glass doors bring the living room of this modern farmhouse right to the edge of the pool deck.Owner Greg Zerkel (pictured below with his fiancée, Patti Webb) fell in love with the property’s views of Bohicket Creek and tasked architect Chad McDonald with designing a home that capitalized on them, while honoring the heritage of the historical farmhouse that once stood there.Andell Bluff encompasses 12 acres and includes a three-bedroom, 3,500-square-foot home, a pool house, and a garage.A large flower and vegetable garden and chicken coop adjoin a pickleball court. Along with the pool deck, pathways, and driveway, the court is made from permeable materials to optimize water drainage across the property.Neutral tones allow the home’s modern artwork, such as this Amy Dixon piece from Hagan Fine Art in the entryway, to pop from the whitewashed oak walls.Bold bronze pendant lamps provide a focal point on the stairwell. The cabinetry continues into the kitchen, showcasing the custom porcelain range hood and quartz countertops. In the butler’s pantry, brass pulls from Bird Hardware accentuate stepped Shaker cabinets painted in Sherwin Williams “Grizzle Gray.”Because the home’s entryway leads directly into the dining room, interior designer Anne Robinson designed a drop ceiling with built-in lighting instead of a chandelier, so as not to block views of the creek. The cozy den features a blue sueded wallcovering from Philip Jeffries that complements a Rick Reinert painting. The primary bedroom suite boasts stunning vistas, including from this luxurious freestanding tub surrounded by porcelain walls and floor tile that add drama to the space. The walk-in shower—with a lateral drain so there’s no need for a door—boasts a modern brass towel heater.A Bernhardt four-poster bed is positioned to enjoy a scene of oak trees and sunsets through the French doors.Dark grasscloth wall coverings from Thibaut add texture to the bedroom and contrast with the white oak shiplap ceiling. The property faces southwest over Bohicket Creek, affording spectacular sunsets framed by majestic oaks. The fire pit near the deepwater dock is Zerkel’s favorite spot to sit and soak up the beauty.Adjacent to the pool, the guest house includes a living room, accented by an art wall featuring pieces from Atrium Art Gallery, where visiting friends and family can lounge on the Arhaus sectional and take in the view.Beauty On The BluffBeauty On The BluffOutdoor furniture from Restoration Hardware features a bold orange color, inspired by Lowcountry sunsets.Beauty On The BluffFor Zerkel, it was the ability to spread out and enjoy nature here on John’s Island that drew him to the property, where he’s enjoying tending to his flock of chickens and puttering in the vegetable garden—things he looks forward to sharing with Patti following their wedding here this fall.
