When George Gershwin spent the summer of 1934 here—mostly barefoot, at a homey cottage on Folly Beach—The News and Courier reported that the composer found it a “shame to work” with the waves calling from across the dunes. Gershwin may have been a New Yorker, but he proved a quick study in proper Lowcountry living. Life is short, and summer even shorter. We should take Gershwin’s sentiment to heart. Our charming and beautiful city is built for recreation and relaxation, from barrier island surf breaks to a plethora of peninsula amusements. So mix yourself a cool drink, lay out a platter of boiled shrimp, take a dip in the ocean, and join us for some leisurely fun, Charleston style.
